Could Someone Give me Advice on FVWM Configuration for Multi-Monitor Setup?

Hello there,

I am reaching out for some guidance on setting up FVWM with a multi-monitor configuration. I have recently transitioned to using FVWM as my window manager and am keen on customizing it to suit my multi-monitor setup.

I want to configure FVWM to use the entire screen real estate effectively. How can I ensure that my desktop background and workspace span across both monitors seamlessly? I am looking to replicate a setup where both monitors act as one large continuous workspace.

I would like to have consistent window placement rules across both monitors. For instance, how can I set up rules so that certain applications always open on a specific monitor or in a specific area?

I am interested in setting up a panel or taskbar that spans both monitors. What are the best practices for configuring FVWM panels to work across multiple displays?

Also, I have gone through this post; https://fvwmforums.org/t/ewmhbasestruts-in-a-multi-monitor-setup-mlops/ which definitely helped me out a lot.

Are there any tips for optimizing FVWM’s performance in a multi-monitor environment? I’m particularly interested in any known tweaks or configurations that can enhance smoothness and responsiveness.

Thanks in advance for your help and assistance. :innocent:

For workspace make sure that DesktopConfiguration is set to global. (See DesktopConfiguration for more information)
For desktop background you will need to use a tool like feh or nitrogen (probably nitrogen).

Yes. Use the style command. For instance:

Style foo StartsOnScreen HDMI-1
Style bar StartsOnScreen eDP

Use the style command and take a look at the PositionPlacement and Geometry options

Create a panel that has a geometry that covers both monitors, or use something like lemonbar or polybar.

What do you mean exactly?
