What data formats of pictures does fvwm support ? I’ve tried to place a *.jpg - wallpaper as a bg - it didn’t work. Then I used a *.png instead et voilà , ça y est.
Can I only use *.png-files ? And if not what formats do you recommend to use ?

It depends on the program you use to set your wallpaper, fvwm-root only supports png and xpm iirc, but other wallpaper setters (most popular seem to be Esetroot and feh) support a lot of additional formats (for example jpg files).
oh ok, i use fvwm-root . time to change it.
I like qiv to set the background, myself. . .
