Don't work

Hello everybody,
Firstly, I’m french and don’t speak english well

I’ve installed fvwm but when I want start it, it failed.
The cursor is working all the time, and if I press a key, it failed and it puts me on the login screen again.
In the error log, it tells me “no such key”.

Thanks,
Marion

How do you login? Do you use a graphical login manager, or do you use ‘startx’?

– Thomas Adam

I use a graphical login manager, by default with Debian Sarge, I think it’s gdm.
But this graphical login manager works good with Gnome, KDE, or Fluxbox …
I think I have a problem with my special keys : I have a Compaq laptop. But how to desactivate those or configurate ?
Sorry for my english, I don’t know if every word exists !
Thanks,
Marion.

OK.

I’m not sure – I know there’s some programs in Debian that will allow you to disable special keys. Just out of interest – when you login and fvwm starts, is CapsLock, or NumLock, or ScrollLock on?

(tu parles l’anglais tres bien)

– Thomas Adam

Thanks
When it starts, no special key is activated.
So, I will try to find a program to disable the special keys !
And I will try to launch fvwm with startx.
Thanks
Marion

Hi,

I think Debian uses XFree86, not x.org as most other current distros.

So your configuration should be in
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4

You can open it as root in an editor.

There is a section “Inputdevice”.

Have a look if there are special entries.

In my old XF86Config4 I used a year ago it looks like this (german keyboard)

Section “InputDevice”
Identifier “Keyboard1”
Driver “Keyboard”
Option “XkbModel” “pc105”
Option “XkbLayout” “de(nodeadkeys)”
Option “XkbOptions” “”
EndSection

I think you must replace “de” (allemand) with “fr” (francais)?

These entries worked fine with fvwm.

Bien de saluts, Mark

After your attempt to launch fvwm failed, switch to the console (ctrl-alt-F1), log in, and look wether there are errors reported in .xession-errors.

Thanks for your answers.
Indeed, Debian uses XFree86.
I’ve tried to launch fvwm with “startx” but that did not go either.
So I will try with this configuration of the keyboard as Mu say to me.
And will look at the errors in the console.
Thanks a lot,

Marion.

Well, I’ve changed my configuration of the keyboard like you, but it’s the same error.

You could delete/rename your Fvwm-Start(configuration)-file.

mv ~/.fvwm/.fvwm2rc ~/.fvwm/.fvwm2rc-old

Then Fvwm should start “clean” without special banner-settings or without trying to run xmodmap.sh

If this works, you can create an empty .fvwm2rc with an editor, and start copying lines from your .fvwmrc-old to the new one.

Like this you can find out the “wrong” entry.
Or you use a .fvwm2rc from this forum (Screenshots and Configs).

Mark

Yes ! It’s ok when I’ve deleted the ~/.fvwm/.fvwm2rc as you say !
I’m writing from fvwm 8)
Then, now I will try to put files of configuration !
Thank you, I will keep you informed,
Marion

tres bien

bonne chance and lots of fun with setting up your configuration.

If it gets too difficult, install fvwm-themes.

This is an addon with many examples in a special “theme”-folder.

But also this forum has many nice configs, and you can customize your desktop better if you understand how they work

Mark

Thanks !
Indeed I have work but that should be pleasant ! I will look at this add-on and the configurations of the forum !
