Hello FVWM Users – New Here & Exploring Config Ideas

Hi all,

Just started exploring FVWM for some lightweight desktop customization on an older machine. The flexibility is really impressive, but I’m still getting my head around some config syntax and scripting.

I’ve been doing lots of searching (Google has been super helpful so far — https://www.google.com) and finally decided to join the forum to learn from others and maybe contribute back down the line.

Thanks in advance for any tips — excited to be here!

Welcome to Fvwm. There is endless scope for configuring the entire system or any part of it. Make it function and behave exactly how you want a WM to do. This flexibility is limited in other Window Managers.

Google search is excellent. Additionally, the search feature in this forum is useful for finding a specific module, decoration, or function. Or post your questions here.
Are you looking for something specific?

I have rebuilt the Fvwm extensions website, which collects small individual configs. The idea is inspired by GNOME extensions that make the system multifunctional with various modules, decors, styles, colors, and functions. It was initially designed for a complete Fvwm system (myExt 2021), but I have now adapted it to work with separate installed codes. You can copy the code and paste it into your config, or create a file and run the line below:
Read $[HOME]/.fvwm/<code.txt>

The website also provides links to other Fvwm and related sites. More links will be added soon.

I tested a few individual codes, it easy to stay simple by using Fvwm default config as the base. Here are three examples:

Read $[HOME]/.fvwm/deskPgNo.txt
Read $[HOME]/.fvwm/button4Dec.txt
Read $[HOME]/.fvwm/dashToD.txt
