Keyboard shortcuts without a menu

I need to provide a number of “keyboard shortcuts” that do not show up on a menu to bring up an xterm. I want to have a key sequence like, “Control-Alt-1” bring up an xterm for user account “1” and “Control-Alt-2” bring up an xterm for user account “2”, etc. I’m not looking for an exact “How To” but some pointers into what would work, like, would “Stroke” work to define a key sequence and not require a menu item?
