I would like to have my active window opaque and all the inactive windows translucent.
Is that possible?
With metisse, yes. With FVWM? No. However, you can sometimes emulate this on a per-application basis (c.f. aterm, rxvt-unicode, etc.)

What was it about my previous answer which didn’t already answer this? For menus it is, for windows no – you need a compositor for that. Some people have had success using them, others not. Searching these forums will tell you that, including how people are using them.
